A couple of months ago British fashion designer Lucy Lambert contacted me to come up with a few designs for her new runway show. She wanted at least 3 avant garde hair ornaments to complement her designs. She described them as reptilian scales meet stain glass church windows. So after much back and forth we agreed on the looks I've posted here. My favorite is the first picture. The front piece is a modified Indian tikka. Something I've been wanting to make for a long time. The crown was probably the most challenging to make. She was thrilled when she received them, and said they went perfectly with the collection.

Paperwork vs. Jane Austen

It’s a little frustrating because this whole week all my allotted creative time has be absorbed by paperwork preparing for reporting my sales tax. The only down side to selling my work. This has of course made me VERY grumpy! I have just two months of paperwork to go and then I am fee again for another year. But your saying Edie why don’t you just do your paperwork every month then you wouldn’t have to go through this again. And to that I say sure I start off every year that way, but slowly a month turns into two then three. Before you know it I haven’t done any in six months. Then it’s just too much to start because I have fifteen different projects I’m working on. So all that paperwork is put in the corner to sob silently until I freak out around May or June. Poor paperwork. But that is ok it is almost done then I am free again! FREE I TELL YOU!

Once I get sprung from this paperwork hell I have a TON of ideas I have to work on. I have one new necklace idea that is simply bursting out of my head to make. So that has to be constructed right away. I am also in the middle of a shrine to Jane Austen that I am particularly proud of. I have always been able to relate in a very real way to her characters. Given the present situation in my life even more so. So a little shrine to her would be just the thing to help me through. All around this post are some process pictures of my little baby. I use to do little shrines, sculptures, and dioramas like this all the time, but jewelry took over my life for the last couple of years. It feels good to get back to that a little bit. I think from now on I will have one that I am working on continually. Since they take much longer to make.

In my research for this piece on Jane I have found that most scholars say there is no definitive portrait of Miss Austen. There are silhouettes of her sister and parents, but none of Jane. So for her image I used a watercolour and pencil sketch, believed to be drawn from life by her sister Cassandra around 1810. Since the drawing is very light I touched it up just a tiny bit so her face could come though and then hand colored it and setting it in a cabachion. Her picture lays on a bed of crimson curly goose feathers to symbolize her country upbringing but the daring of her mind, and determination of her spirit. Rolled up hand written pages are creatiuvly exploding from her prim propper Hanoverian/ Georgian period head. The papers are ornamented like little crowns with bits of ometal elevating the pages to the regal status that we all hold her work in today. The base of the piece is made up of images of her family and glimpses of her past. In there you will she her parents and beloved sister, various homes she lived in including her house in Bath, and Thomas Langlois Lefroy a great love in her life. The very things that formed her reality and made her what she was, to make her the creative spirit that we all love so much. So here is a taste of what it will look like. The finished piece will have an arch around the sculpture, and will be both free standing and wall hanging. Once I get this stupid paperwork done Jane will once again get all my attention, as she should.

My Little Crow Painting

Summer is usually the worst time creatively for me. Right around the first of July, I enter into a funk that I just can’t shake until the first fall breezes tickle my face. But for some reason ideas just keep popping into my head. Along with that is an equally powerful drive to actually make those things. Usually the two never connect. Things that I have been meaning to make for years are suddenly manifesting on my workbench. It’s making me so happy. This little crow painting is the first of many projects that have been stewing in my brain for sometime. So happy to see one has popped out of my head into reality. A southern gothic design thing came over me an forced me to make it. No really I'm serious my creativity wouldn't let me work on anything else till it was done. Now that it is finished I'm very happy with the result.

Project Hair Falls

My LIFE has been such a whirlwind lately. Several custom orders, my Mom is moving so I’ve been helping her through that, and my accounting finals are coming up. I have always had a job as a bookkeeper to supplement my web store. I know, I know you never would have pegged the artsy girl as the bookkeeping type. Well never would I. I sort of fell into the position a long time ago, and found that my neurotic mix of OCD, and penchant for meticulously scrutinizing everything makes me perfect for the position. Actually most days people treat me like I’m doing magic tricks with approprate ooooh’s and aaaaah’s, and then they buy me lunch. Quietly set it on the corner of my desk and back away in reverence so as not to disturb me. Ok it’s not that dramatic, but lunch does appear on my desk randomly. Cookies use to as well, but that doesn’t happen much anymore and it makes me sad. Ok as you can tell I have a lot of time for my mind to wonder at work. I am constantly busy, but it is mostly tedious routine so my brain is free to roam at will. In addition, it gives my brain a rest from the creative grind so I don’t get burned out. Putting me outside that realm for just enough time during the day so that I am refreshed when I get back to my workbench in the afternoon.. Actually, I doubt I would have had the confidence to open my web store without this job. But that is a story for another time.

Anyway…. back to the point I was trying to make. So at the beginning of this year I didn’t think my life was full enough with running my on-line business, taking care of my MOM, and helping her move so I thought I would start getting a degree in Accounting. I just seem to LOVE piling the work on myself. I already have a degree in Art, Anthropology, Visual Presentation, and was two classes shy of a minor in Japanese and Fencing, but those don’t really help if I needed to find another bookkeeping job. Though I’ve been working in the field for sometime now I just hate that confused look that comes over human resources people’s faces when they look over my resume. So back to school I go. I have to tell you, as you might suspect, I LOATH accounting courses. I dearly love doing the work as a job, but it is a COMPLETELY different thing to sit in a class and mesmerize the principals behind the systems. Finals are this week so I am planning out my summer, to be used to the fullest till I go back to school in the fall. It all starts this weekend. I’m going to cat sit for my sister, and when I do that I usually don’t bring any of my normal art or jewelry projects with me. I usually pick up a project I have long since pushed aside and work on that. I find that if I completely remove myself from what medium I normally work in it replenishes my creativity and kick-starts my motivation. So this weekend I’m going to try my had at making hair falls again. A dear, dear friend taught me how to make them many years ago, but my hands never took to it. It’s an arduous process that takes a ton of time and determination. But I have all the supplies to make just the ones I want so I’ve got to give it one more try. So here is a little look book of all that styles of hair falls that inspires me on my quest for really long awesomely edgy hair. I will keep you updated to my progress.

A Tiara for Nacreous Alchemy

I've been working on a custom tiara for a fellow Etsy-ian Miss Nacreous Alchemy. She is an amazing mixed media and found object artist who I greatly admire. She will be vending at the Black Market in Anaheim this weekend, and wanted just the right hair accessory to complete her look for the festivities. You can't imagine how excited I was when she ask me to complete that task for her. She ended up loving the final result. The fuchsia curly goose feathers looked STUNNING with her purple highlights, and had a wonderful time at the event.

Vintage Japanese Sweets Mold

Vintage from Japan is this wonderful shop on Etsy that offers all sort of goodies straight from the land of the rising sun. The first time I saw these sweet molds I fell in love. Here is how the shop describes what they are exactly an how they are used... "Often made of sakura (cherry wood) and seasoned for about 3 years before carving, kashigata were used to make dried confectionery made of rice flour and sugar called rakugan. Earliest records show that this practice dates back to the mid-17th century. These confections were used as offerings and snacks for celebratory occasions and even unfortunate events. For example when a person died, it was expensive to give flowers or fresh food so, people made these sweets in the form of flowers, fish etc. These items were then placed on the "butsudan" (family shrine found in the house) for the dead person.Kashigata were also used in the making of wagashi (nama-gashi or freshly made cake and hi-gashi or dried confectionery) for tea ceremonies.
Common kashigata motifs in the Edo era - chrysanthemums, plum blossoms
Meiji Era - spread of western technology - balloons, planes
World War II - national pride heightened - cherry blossoms, battleships - used as gifts for departing troops, ceremonies and commemorative occasions.
With the advent of refrigeration, fresh fish replaced rakugan motifs like the sea bream. Sadly today, making offerings for fortunate and unfortunate events is no longer a common practice. This in turn has lessened rakugan demand although they are still found in tea ceremonies and homes. The decrease in kashigata artisans today has made kashigata carving a dying craft making kashigata itself a sought-after collectible."

Akhenaten the rad-est pharaoh EVER!

Akhenaten is my favorite Egyptian pharaoh, EVER!!! Here is a little about him so that more people are astounded by his rad-ness.

Akhenaten (meaning "living spirit of Aten") was known before the fifth year of his reign as Amenhotep IV (sometimes given its Greek form, Amenophis IV, and meaning Amun is Satisfied), a Pharaoh of the Eighteenth dynasty of Egypt, ruled for 17 years and died perhaps in 1336 BC or 1334 BC. He is especially noted for abandoning traditional Egyptian polytheism and introducing worship centered on the Aten, which is sometimes described as monotheistic or henotheistic. An early inscription likens him to the sun as compared to stars, and later official language avoids calling the Aten a god, giving the solar deity a status above mere gods.
Akhenaten tried to bring about a departure from traditional religion, yet in the end it would not be accepted. After his death, traditional religious practice was gradually restored, and when some dozen years later rulers without clear rights of succession from the Eighteenth Dynasty founded a new dynasty, they discredited Akhenaten and his immediate successors, referring to Akhenaten himself as "the enemy" in archival records. He was all but lost from history until the discovery, in the 19th century, of Amarna, the site of Akhetaten, the city he built for the Aten. Early excavations at Amarna by Flinders Petrie sparked interest in the enigmatic pharaoh, whose tomb was unearthed in 1907 in a dig led by Edward R. Ayrton. Interest in Akhenaten increased with the discovery in the Valley of the Kings, at Luxor, of thetomb of King Tutankhamun, who has been proved to be Akhenaten's son according to DNA testing in 2010 by Zahi Hawass of Cairo. Akhenaten remains an interesting figure, as does his Queen, Nefertiti. Their modern interest comes partly from his connection with Tutankhamun, partly from the unique style and high quality of the pictorial arts he patronized, and partly from ongoing interest in the religion he attempted to establish.

Some recent debate has focused on the extent to which Akhenaten forced his religious reforms on his people. Certainly, as time drew on, he revised the names of the Aten, and other religious language, to increasingly exclude references to other gods; at some point, also, he embarked on the wide-scale erasure of traditional gods' names, especially those of Amun. Some of his court changed their names to remove them from the patronage of other gods and place them under that of Aten (or Ra, with whom Akhenaten equated the Aten). Yet, even at Amarna itself, some courtiers kept such names as Ahmose ("child of the moon god", the owner of tomb 3), and the sculptor's workshop where the famous Nefertiti bust, and other works of royal portraiture, were found, is associated with an artist known to have been called Thutmose ("child of Thoth"). An overwhelmingly large number of faience amulets at Amarna also show that talismans of the household-and-childbirth gods Bes and Taweret, the eye of Horus, and amulets of other traditional deities, were openly worn by its citizens. Indeed, a cache of royal jewelry found buried near the Amarna royal tombs (now in the National Museum of Scotland) includes a finger ring referring to Mut, the wife of Amun. Such evidence suggests that though Akhenaten shifted funding away from traditional temples, his policies were fairly tolerant until some point, perhaps a particular event as yet unknown, toward the end of the reign.
Following Akhenaten's death, change was gradual at first. Within a decade a comprehensive political, religious and artistic reformation began promoting a return of Egyptian life to the norms it had followed during his father's reign. Much of the art and building infrastructure created during Akhenaten's reign was defaced or destroyed in the period following his death, particularly during the reigns of Horemheb and the early Nineteenth Dynasty kings. This is hysterical! Yep it's a gangster rap about arts and crafts. But what the kids are making is REALLY cool! I wish I was that creative when I was a kid. The box city is AMAZING! Especially the building with the elevator, and roof top pool. It almost makes me wish I had kids so I could use up all the boxes in my kitchen instead of throwing them away.

I am so excited!!! Pomona College theater department in California purchased one of my clockhand chokers to use in their performance of The Threepenny Opera!!!! This production will be shown at the Seaver Theatre at Pomona College in Claremont, California. This play is a personal favorite of mine. I can’t wait to see the pictures. Irezumi (入れ墨, 入墨, 紋身, 刺花, 剳青, 黥 or 刺青) is a Japanese word that refers to the insertion of ink under the skin to leave a permanent, usually decorative mark; a form of tattooing.
The word can be written in several ways, each with slightly different connotations. The most common way of writing irezumi is with the Chinese characters 入れ墨 or 入墨, literally meaning to "insert ink". The characters 紋身 (also pronounced bunshin) suggest "decorating the body". 剳青 is more esoteric, being written with the characters for "stay" or "remain" and "blue" or "green", and probably refers to the appearance of the main shading ink under the skin. 黥 (meaning "tattooing") is rarely used, and the characters 刺青 combine the meanings "pierce", "stab", or "prick", and "blue" or "green", referring to the traditionalJapanese method of tattooing by hand.

Tattooing for spiritual and decorative purposes in Japan is thought to extend back to at least the Jōmon or paleolithic period (approximately 10,000 BC). Some scholars have suggested that the distinctive cord-marked patterns observed on the faces and bodies of figures dated to that period represent tattoos, but this claim is by no means unanimous. There are similarities,however, between such markings and the tattoo traditions observed in other contemporaneous cultures.
In the following Yayoi period (c. 300 BC–300 AD) tattoo designs were observed and remarked upon by Chinese visitors. Such designs were thought to have spiritual significance as well as functioning as a status symbol.
Starting in the Kofun period (300–600 AD) tattoos began to assume negative connotations. Instead of being used for ritual orstatus purposes, tattooed marks began to be placed on criminals as a punishment (this was mirrored in ancient Rome, whereslaves were known to have been tattooed with mottoes such as "I am a slave who has run away from his master").

Until the Edo period (1600–1868 AD) the role of tattoos in Japanese society fluctuated. Tattooed marks were still used as punishment, but minor fads for decorative tattoos—some featuring designs that would be completed only when lovers' hands were joined—also came and went. It was in the Edo period, however, that Japanese decorative tattooing began to develop into the advanced art form it is known as today.
The impetus for the development of the art were the development of the art of woodblock printing and the release of the popular Chinese novel Suikoden, a tale of rebel courage and manly bravery illustrated with lavish woodblock prints showing men in heroic scenes, their bodies decorated with dragons and other mythical beasts, flowers, ferocious tigers and religious images. The novel was an immediate success, and demand for the type of tattoos seen in its illustrations was simultaneous.Woodblock artists began tattooing.[citation needed] They used many of the same tools for imprinting designs in human flesh as they did to create their woodblock prints, including chisels, gouges and, most importantly, unique ink known as Nara ink, or
Nara black, the ink that famously turns blue-green under the skin.
There is academic debate over who wore these elaborate tattoos. Some scholars say that it was the lower classes who wore—and flaunted—such tattoos. Others claim that wealthy merchants, barred by law from flaunting their wealth, wore expensive irezumi under their clothes. It is known for certain that irezumi became associated with firemen, dashing figures of bravery and roguish sex-appeal who wore them as a form of spiritual protection (and, no doubt, for their beauty as well).

At the beginning of the Meiji period the Japanese government, wanting to protect its image and make a good impression on the West, outlawed tattoos, and irezumi took on connotations of criminality. Nevertheless, fascinated foreigners went to Japan seeking the skills of tattoo artists, and traditional tattooing continued underground.
Tattooing was legalized by the occupation forces in 1945, but has retained its image of criminality. For many years, traditional Japanese tattoos were associated with the yakuza, Japan's notorious mafia, and manybusinesses in Japan (such as public baths, fitness centers and hot springs) still ban customers with tattoos. I have just had an epiphany! I have about eight fashion pictures that I have loved FOREVER. Each time I have switched computer those images have been transfer as well. They are just some of my favorite outfits on the planet. The mixture of 20's and 50's fashion sense mixed with a Chinese and African accessories just steals my heart. Well in researching one of the pictures I just realised that they are all from the same designer, John Galliano, andpretty much from the same show. January 1997 Christian Dior. They all are all so different looking, it amazes me. I wish I had every one of them.

Black Eye Suzie Art Dolls

I just love Black Eye Suzie art dolls. They are so expressive and delicate. The one pictured has to be my favorite, with her little parasol and pensive look. She also has a great blog. Some very interesting posts on her actually constructing her dolls. Her doll construction fascinates me. There head, hands and feet are individually sculpted from paperclay (no molds). Some of her earlier bodies were made of fiberfill and cotton fabric over a wire armature. Lately they look like paper clay forms strung together with ball joints. Their faces are hand-painted with water colours, with handmade eyes. Such pretty little elegant creatures.

Underwater microphones originally intended to detect Soviet submarines during the Cold War recorded a very low, loud, repeating sound somewhere near S 50°, W 100°. When you digitally speed up the sound (which, when unaltered, lasts longer than a minute), it sounds like "bloop." The noise is similar to a whale's song, but biologists point out it would take a whale larger than any known to man to make a noise like the Bloop. Kitsune (狐?, IPA: [kitsɯne] ( listen)) is the Japanese word for fox. Foxes are a common subject of Japanese folklore; in English, kitsune refers to them in this context. Stories depict them as intelligent beings and as possessing magical abilities that increase with their age and wisdom. Foremost among these is the ability to assume human form. While some folktales speak of kitsune employing this ability to trick others—as foxes in folklore often do—other stories portray them as faithful guardians, friends, lovers, and wives.
Foxes and human beings lived close together in ancient Japan; this companionship gave rise to legends about the creatures. Kitsune have become closely associated with Inari, a Shinto kami or spirit, and serve as its messengers. This role has reinforced the fox's supernatural significance. The more tails a kitsune has—they may have as many as nine—the older, wiser, and more powerful it is. Because of their potential power and influence, some people make offerings to them as to a deity.

It is widely agreed that many fox myths in Japan can be traced to China, Korea, or India. Chinese folk tales tell of fox spirits (called Huli-jing) that may have up to nine tails, or kumiho as they are known in Korea. Many of the earliest surviving stories are recorded in the Konjaku Monogatari, an 11th-century collection of Chinese, Indian, and Japanese narratives.[1]
There is debate whether the kitsune myths originated entirely from foreign sources or are in part an indigenous Japanese concept dating as far back as the fifth century BC. Japanese folklorist Kiyoshi Nozaki argues that the Japanese regarded kitsune positively as early as the 4th century A.D.; the only things imported from China or Korea were the kitsune's negative attributes.[2] He states that, according to a 16th-century book of records called theNihon Ryakki, foxes and human beings lived close together in ancient Japan, and he contends that indigenous legends about the creatures arose as a result.[3] Inari scholar Karen Smyers notes that the idea of the fox as seductress and the connection of the fox myths to Buddhism were introduced into Japanese folklore through similar Chinese stories, but she maintains that some fox stories contain elements unique to Japan.

Kitsune are believed to possess superior intelligence, long life, and magical powers. They are a type of yōkai, or spiritual entity,and the word kitsune is often translated as fox spirit. However, this does not mean that kitsune are ghosts, nor that theyare fundamentally different from regular foxes. Because the word spirit is used to reflect a state of knowledge or enlightenment, all long-lived foxes gain supernatural abilities[4]
There are two common classifications of kitsune. The zenko (善狐?, literally good foxes) are benevolent, celestial foxes associated with the god Inari; they are sometimes simply called Inari foxes. On the other hand, the yako (野狐?, literally field foxes, also called nogitsune) tend to be mischievous or even malicious.[8] Local traditions add further types.[9] For example, a ninko is an invisible fox spirit that human beings can only perceive when it possesses them. Another tradition classifies kitsune into one of thirteen types defined by which supernatural abilities the kitsune possesses.[10][11]
Physically, kitsune are noted for having as many as nine tails.[12] Generally, a greater number of tails indicates an older and more powerful fox; in fact, some folktales say that a fox will only grow additional tails after it has lived 100 years.[13] One, five, seven, and nine tails are the most common numbers in folk stories.[14] When a kitsune gains its ninth tail, its fur becomes white or gold.[12] These kyūbi no kitsune (九尾の狐?, nine-tailed foxes) gain the abilities to see and hear anything happening anywhere in the world. Snow Monkeys

Primate Culture... Their innate curiosity leads them to try new things, but it’s their culture — the passing of information from one generation to the next — that teaches them much of what they know. Their young learn by reaching out with their hands to experience the world around them, grasping new objects, slowly piecing together an understanding of their society. They learn from their families how to find food, communicate, recognize kin, even use tools, medicine, and language.

Criteria for Cultural Behavior
Innovation: New pattern is invented or modified.
Dissemination: Pattern is acquired (through imitation) by another from an innovator.
Standardization: For of pattern is consistent and stylized.
Durability: Pattern is performed without presence of demonstrator.
Tradition: Pattern persists from innovator's generation to the next.
Nonsubsistence: Pattern transcends subsistence.
Naturalness: Pattern is shown in absence of direct human influence.

Japanese Macaque Cultural Behavior- This short clip from the film Life On Earth: Life In The Trees discusses one example (washing sweet potatoes) of the inventive behavior (or culture) of a troop of Japanese snow monkeys (species Macaca fuscata) living on the Japanese island of Koshima. In order to enhance viewing opportunities, primatologists put sweet potatoes along the beach to bring the monkeys out into the open. One macaque, named Imo, began to wash the sand off of her sweet potatoes in the water instead of brushing it off with her hand as other macaques did. Over time, this behavior spread to other members of the troop and was passed on from generation to generation. Interestingly, this potato washing behavior became even more modified as some macaques began washing their sweet potatos in salt water, even though they's already washed them in fresh water. Why they did this isn't clear, but perhpas they were attempting to enhance the potatoes' flavor.

Imo's second feat of genius was to develop a method for sorting wheat from sand. Imo discovered that rather than eat the wheat handouts grain by grain, a mixture of wheat and sand could be dropped in water allowing the wheat to float and the sand to sink. Within several years many of the younger monkeys practiced this behavior.

Many researchers in the Japanese forested mountains have also documented an unusual activity of the Japanese macaques. The animals know how to make tiny snowballs in their hands, using their opposable thumbs, and then roll them along the ground to create larger snowballs, much like human children do. While this behavior doesn't appear to have survival purpose, whole troops of Japanese macaques engage in the activity as a social process.

In 1979 a primatologist at the Primate Research Institute (PRI) at Kyoto University noticed one female monkey playing with stones. No one had ever seen, or heard about, anything like it. It was like a child playing with building blocks. When the primatologists returned to the site in 1983 he was astounded by what he saw. "Half the group was playing with stones, banging them on nearby roofs and making a total racquet," he said. "I couldn't understand why a behavior that seemed to have no adaptive significance—it didn't provide an edge for survival or reproduction—could spread through a group and be maintained in a society for so long."
When behaviors or innovations are adopted by other members of the group, passing from parent to offspring, infant to parent,or adult-to-adult, a "culture" or tradition is born. Culture and innovation are often ways of adapting to environmental changes, or a response to a change in lifestyle. Many cultural differences, independent of human interference, have been observed between monkey troops living around Japan. The troops differ in eating habits; for instance, monkeys in some regions eat bird's eggs. Social behaviors between macaques from disparate regions also vary; only in some troops do males engage in paternal care for infants. In other troops social rank is sharply defined; males behave more aggressively towards one another. After 50 years of observation, primatologists believe that macaques have an established culture: invented behaviors passed from one monkey to another.

Human culture is transmitted through language and the written word; individuals are taught in detail how to do something through teaching and imitation. With nonhuman primates like macaques, the learning process occurs through observation. Monkey culture is definitely not the same as human culture, said Hirata. But by studying the monkeys "we see an evolutionary basis for our culture," he said. "These monkeys are similar to humans because they take an interest in the behavior of other individuals—which is vital for the development of a culture." I dearly love Moroccan lanterns! When I was little my favorite store had one hanging from the center of the main floor. It was so glamours, and foreign it captivated me and I've been enamored with them ever since. About ten years ago I found the best trio of lanterns in the whole world. One really huge one and two smaller ones in descending order. They were my favorite possessions for years. But this is where the story turns tragic. I was in the process of moving in with my boyfriend at the time. I spent half of my week at his apartment and half at school. So of course my most prized possessions when to live at his place for safe keeping. Can you sense what I'm going to say girls. Yep... all of a sudden he broke up with me and in the emotional torment of moving my stuff out I forgot them. It was too hard to goback and get them after that. And before I knew it he moved to another city. -SIGH- I have yet to find their equal even in a picture so I made this post as a little shrine to my missing lanterns. To heal my wounded designers heart. I will find their equal one day until then I have pretty pictures to look at to appease me.

Supernatural Japanese Parlour Game

Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai (百物語怪談会?, lit., A Gathering of One Hundred Supernatural Tales) was a popular parlour game during the Edo period in Japan.
The game was a simple one. In a room, as night fell, one hundred candles were lit. Guests and players gathered around the candles, taking turns telling kaidan. kaidan refers to any ghost or horror story, but it has an old-fashioned ring to it that carries the connotation of Edo period Japanese folktales (a person only usues that term if they want to give and old fashioned slant to what they are describing). After each kaidan, a single candle was extinguished, and the room slowly grew darker and darker. The process was an evocation, with the final candle believed to summon a supernatural entity.
The origin of the game is unknown. It is thought that it was first played amongst the samurai class as a test of courage, and later became fashionable amongst the townsmen.
A true popular phenomenon, the popularity of Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai combined with new printing technology created aboom in the publication of kaidan-themed books collecting appropriate tales from every corner of Japan and China. Books in this genre often used the term Hyakumonogatari in the title, and in fact the published tale’s popularity continued long after the fad for the game had faded. Japanese Ghosts continued

While all Japanese ghosts are called yūrei, within that category there are several specific types of phantom, classified mainly by the manner they died or their reason for returning to Earth.
Onryō - Vengeful ghosts who come back from purgatory for a wrong done to them during their lifetime.
Ubume - A mother ghost who died in childbirth, or died leaving young children behind. This yūrei returns to care for her children, often bringing them sweets.
Goryō - Vengeful ghosts of the aristocratic class, especially those who were martyred.
Funayūrei - The ghosts of those who died at sea. These ghosts are sometimes depicted as scaly fish-like humanoids and some may even have a form similar to that of a mermaid or merman.
Zashiki-warashi - The ghosts of children, often mischievous rather than dangerous.
Samurai Ghosts - Veterans of the Genpei War who fell in battle. Warrior Ghosts almost exclusively appear in Noh Theater. Unlike most other yūrei, these ghosts are usually shown with legs.

Seductress Ghosts - The ghost of a woman or man who initiates a post-death love affair with a living human

Buddhist Ghosts
There are two types of ghosts specific to Buddhism, both being examples of unfullfilled earthly hungers being carried on after death. They are different from other classifications of yūrei due to their wholly religious nature.

Ikiryō
In Japanese folklore, not only the dead are able to manifest their reikon for a haunting. Living creatures possessed by extraordinary jealousy or rage can release their spirit as an ikiryō 生き霊, a living ghost that can enact its will while still alive.
The most famous example of an ikiryo is Rokujo no Miyasundokoro, from the novel The Tale of Genji.

ObakeYūrei often fall under the general umbrella term of obake, derived from the verb bakeru, meaning "to change"; thus obake arepreternatural beings who have undergone some sort of change, from the natural realm to the supernatural.
However, Kunio Yanagita, one of Japan's earliest and foremost folklorists, made a clear distinction between yūrei and obake in his seminal "Yokaidangi (Lectures on Monsters)." He claimed that yūrei haunt a particular person, while obake haunt a particular place.
When looking at typical kaidan, this does not appear to be true. Yūrei such as Okiku haunt a particular place -in Okiku's case, the well where she died-, and continue to do so long after the person who killed them has died.

Yūrei do not wander at random, but generally stay near a specific location, such as where they were killed or where their body lies, or follow a specific person, such as their murderer, or a beloved. They usually appear between 2 and 3 a.m, the witching hour for Japan, when the veils between the world of the dead and the world of the living are at their thinnest.
Yūrei will continue to haunt that particular person or place until their purpose is fulfilled, and they can move on to the afterlife. However, some particularly strong yūrei, specifically onryō who are consumed by vengeance, continue to haunt long after their killers have been brought to justice.
Famous hauntings
Some famous locations that are said to be haunted by yūrei are the well of Himeji Castle, haunted by the ghost of Okiku, and Aokigahara, the forest at the bottom of Mt. Fuji, which is a popular location for suicide. A particularly powerful onryō, Oiwa, is said to be able to bring vengeance on any actress portraying her part in a theater or film adaptation.

Zenshoan(全生庵) Temple in Tokyo, Japan is known for its collection of yūrei paintings, known as the Yūrei-ga gallery. The 50 silk paintings, most of which date back 150 to 200 years, depict a variety of apparitions from the forlorn to the ghastly.
The scrolls were collected by Sanyu-tei Encho(三遊亭円朝), a famous storyteller (rakugo artist) during the Edo era who studied at Zenshoan. Encho is said to have collected the scrolls as a source of inspiration for the ghostly tales he loved to tell in summer.

Japanese Ghosts

Yūrei (幽霊) are figures in Japanese folklore, analogous to Western legends of ghosts. The name consists of two kanji, 幽 (yū), meaning "faint" or "dim" and 霊 (rei), meaning "soul" or "spirit." Alternative names include 亡霊 (Bōrei) meaning ruined or departed spirit, 死霊 (Shiryō) meaning dead spirit, or the more encompassing 妖怪 (Yōkai) or お化け (Obake).

According to traditional Japanese beliefs, all humans have a spirit or soul called a 霊魂 (reikon). When a person dies, the reikon leaves the body and enters a form of purgatory, where it waits for the proper funeral and post-funeral rites to be performed, so that it may join its ancestors. If this is done correctly, the reikon is believed to be a protector of the living family and to return yearly in August during the Obon Festival to receive thanks. However, if the person dies in a sudden or violent manner such as murder or suicide, if the proper rites have not been performed, or if they are influenced by powerful emotions such as a desire for revenge, love, jealousy, hatred or sorrow, the reikon is thought to transform into a yūrei, which can then bridge the gap back to the physical world.
The yūrei then exists on Earth until it can be laid to rest, either by performing the missing rituals, or resolving the emotional conflict that still ties it to the physical plane. If the rituals are not completed or the conflict left unresolved, the yūrei will persist in its haunting.

Today, the appearance of yūrei in film and stage is somewhat uniform, instantly signalling the ghostly nature of the figure, and assuring that it is culturally authentic.

White clothing - Yūrei are usually dressed in white, signifying the white burial kimono used in Edo period funeral rituals. In Shinto, white is a color of ritual purity, traditionally reserved for priests and the dead. This kimono can either be a katabira (a plain, white, unlined kimono) or a kyokatabira (a white katabira inscribed with Buddhist sutras). They sometimes have a hitaikakushi (lit., "forehead cover"), which is a small white triangular piece of cloth tied around the head.

Black hair - Hair of a yūrei is often long, black and disheveled, which some believe to be a trademark carried over from Kabuki Theater, where wigs are used for all actors. However, this is a misconception. Japanese women traditionally grew their hair long and wore it pinned up, and it was let down for the funeral and burial.

Hands and feet - A yūrei's hands dangle lifelessly from the wrists, which are held outstretched with the elbows near the body. They typically lack legs and feet, floating in the air. These features originated in Edo period ukiyo-e prints, but were quickly copied over to kabuki. In kabuki, this lack of legs and feet is often represented by the use of a very long kimono, or even hoisting the actor into the air by a series of ropes and pulleys.

Blood Rorschach

My boyfriends and my anniversary was this last Sunday. We are both artists so we usually make things for one another for such occasions. This year I wanted his gift to be very special, and personal. So what did I do? I made a Blood Rorschach!!! You know ink blot tests, but instead of ink... you guessed it my blood. Alright don't freak out I know it's weird, ( you have seen my other artwork right?). Don't worry I'm too much of a chicken to cut myself for it. A couple of weeks ago I cut myself with an exacto like I always do. Usually I wear leather gardening gloves whenever I even think of holding an exacto knife, but this night I was sleepy and forgot. Also, that day I had taken a lot of sinus medication so once the wound opened it didn't clot right away and I had enough time to grab some paper, and play with it. I realize that this isn't the first thing people think of when one cuts themselves, but you didn't grow up in my family. My oldest sister who is a sculptress did an entire series of blood Rorschachs for a gallery show a few years ago, ( She had the blood taken from her by a nurse ). I was VERY please with the end result. The variation in quality of line, and shading made me very proud. The I accented the piece and give it definition with a brown micron pigment pen. The only thing that irritates me that I only had crappy computer paper to put it on. It was the only thing I had within reach. I will know better for next time.

Tokaido Yotsuya Kaidan

I just caught Tokaido Yotsuya Kaidan on TCM tonight. I WAS going to go to bed early, but noooooo TCM has to lure me in and hold my attention till 3 am with an ancient Japanese ghost story yet again. Thanks TCM! Thanks sooooo much! I liked it so much that I tried to find the movie on line to buy it. Of course it is unavailable, but in snooping around the net I found that this movie is based on a much older Kabuki story. This history of this play is really quite interesting. Below is some of what I learned.

"Yotsuya Kaidan, the story of Oiwa and Tamiya Iemon, is a tale of betrayal, murder and ghostly revenge. Arguably the most famous Japanese ghost story of all time, it has been adapted for film over 30 times, and continues to be an influence on Japanese horror today. Written in 1825 by Tsuruya Nanboku IV as a kabuki play, the original title was Tōkaidō Yotsuya Kaidan. It is now generally shortened, and loosely translates as Ghost Story of Yotsuya. First staged in July 1825, Yotsuya Kaidan appeared at the Nakamuraza theater as a double-feature with the immensely popular Kanadehon Chushingura. Normally, with a Kabuki double-feature, the first play is staged in its entirety, followed by the second play. However, in the case of Yotsuya Kaidan it was decided to interweave the two dramas, with a full staging on two days. The play was incredibly successful, and forced the producers to schedule extra out-of-season performances to meet demand. The story tapped into people’s fears by bringing the ghosts of Japan out of the temples and aristocrats' mansions and into the home of common people, the exact type of people who were the audience of his theater.

Oiwa is an onryō, a ghost who seeks vengeance. Her strong passion for revenge allows her to bridge the gap back to Earth. She shares most of the common traits of this style of Japanese ghost, including the white dress representing the burial kimono she would have worn, the long, ragged hair and white/indigo face that marks a ghost in kabuki theater. There are specific traits to Oiwa that set her apart physically from other onryo. Most famous is her left eye, which droops down her face due to poison given her by Iemon. This feature is exaggerated in kabuki performances to give Oiwa a distinct appearance. She is often shown as partially bald, another effect of the poison. In a spectacular scene in the kabuki play, the living Oiwa sits before a mirror and combs her hair, which comes falling out due to the poison. This scene is a subversion of erotically-charged hair combing scenes in kabuki love plays. The hair piles up to tremendous heights, achieved by a stage hand who sits under the stage and pushes more and more hair up through the floor while Oiwa is combing. Oiwa is supposedly buried at a temple, Myogyo-ji, in Sugamo, a neighborhood of Tokyo. The date of her death is listed as February 22, 1636. Several productions of Yotsuya Kaidan, including television and movie adaptations, have reported mysterious accidents, injuries and even deaths. Prior to staging an adaptation of Yotsuya Kaidan it is now a tradition for the principal actors and the director to make a pilgrimage to Oiwa's grave and ask her permission and blessing for their production. This is considered especially important of the actor assuming the role of Oiwa.

Sadako Yamamura from the film Ring is a clear homage to Oiwa. Her final appearance is a direct adaptation of Oiwa, including the cascading hair and drooping, malformed eye. Also in Ju-on when Hitomi is watching the television, the television presenter is morphed into a woman with one small eye and one large eye- possibly a reference to Oiwa. A movie with the best hair ornament EVER!!! " The Adventures of Marco Polo is a 1938 drama-adventure genre film, and one of the most elaborate and costly of Samuel Goldwyn's productions. Nicolo Polo shows treasures from China and sends his son Marco Polo (Gary Cooper) there with his assistant (and comic relief) Binguccio (Ernest Truex). They sail from Venice, are shipwrecked, and cross the desert of Persia and the mountains of Tibet to China, to seek out Peking and the palace of China's ruler, Kublai Khan (George Barbier).
The philosopher/fireworks-maker Chen Tsu (H. B. Warner) is the first friend they make in the city, and invites them into his home for a meal of spaghetti. Children explode a fire-cracker, and Marco thinks it could be a weapon. Meanwhile, at the Palace, Ahmed (Basil Rathbone), the Emperor's adviser, harboring dubious ambitions of his own, convinces Emperor Kublai Khan that his army of a million men can conquer Japan.
Kublai Khan promises Princess Kukachin (Sigrid Gurie) to the King of Persia. Marco, arriving at the palace, sees Kukachin praying for a handsome husband. Marco is granted an audience with the emperor at the same time as a group of ladies-in-waiting arrive; Kublai Khan lets Marco test the maidens to find out which are the most worthy. Marco tests them all with a question ("How many teeth does a snapping turtle have?"), and he sends off the ones who had incorrectly guessed the answer, as well as those who had told him the correct answer (none), retaining those saying they did not know. His reasoning behind this is that they are the perfect ladies-in-waiting, not overly intelligent, and honest. Kublai agrees and Marco immediately becomes a favored guest. Ahmed shows Marco his private tower with vulturesand executes a spy via a trapdoor into a lion pit. Kukachin tells Marco that she is going to marry the King of Persia, but, having fallen in love with her, he shows her what a kiss is. A guard tells Ahmed, who vows to keep Marco out of the way. For some reason in my searches around the web all these odd Kabuto or Samuri helmets have been popping up. One in particular a friend pointed out to me, little miss MonstrousIndustry. It's a bunny, and I LOVE him!

"A kabuto (兜, 冑) is a helmet used with traditional Japanese armour as worn by samurai. It features a strong bowl, the "hachi", which protects the crown of the head, a suspended series of articulated plates (the "shikoro") to protect the neck, and often a crest of the clan (mon). In the Japanese language, the word kabuto is a generic name for just any helmet, but in Western usage it refers to a distinctively Japanese Samurai helmet. Another form of kabuto is the "kawari kabuto", or "strange helmet". During the Momoyama period of intense civil warfare, theproduction of helmets was simplified to a three or four plate design that lacked many of the ornamental features of earlier helmets. To offset the plain, utilitarian form of the new helmet, and to provide visibility and presence on the battlefield, armorers began to build fantastic shapes on top of the simple helmets in harikake, or lacquered paper over a wooden armature. These shapes mimicked forms from Japanese culture and mythology, including fish, cow horns, the head of the god of longevity, bolts of silk, head scarved, ichi-no-tani canyon, and ace heads, among many others. I just saw this movie last night, and I am captivated by Gene Tierney (as always), and the hair styles of the main charture Gin Sling. Here is the synopsis with my favorite word used "smarmy" ...

"The Christmas truce was a series of widespread unofficial ceasefires that took place along the Western Front around Christmas of 1914, during the First World War. Through the week leading up to Christmas, parties of German and British soldiers began to exchange seasonal greetings and songs between their trenches; on occasion, the tension was reduced to the point that individuals would walk across to talk to their opposite numbers bearing gifts. On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, many soldiers from both sides – as well as, to a lesser degree, from French units – independently ventured into no man's land, where they mingled, exchanging food and souvenirs. It goes on really well too,and stays on a super long time. Honestly I love her eye shadows better than my Smashbox, or Bare Minerals. The colors are true, and stay put all night on your lids. I have been hunting my whole life for a really true red eyeshadow, and to have it made for me by a teammate who could ask for more. So here it is EJPcreations- Darksider eye shadow.

I love this design so much. So imagine how happy I was a couple weeks ago when a customer contacted me to make one for her special for the Christmas holiday's. Last time I listed it I made one for me and one for the shop. As I was wearing mine out one day a very nice lady forced me to sell it to her on the street. Awesome! then she contacted me that night and purchased the second one for her friend. So I had to take the listing down. That evening I was contacted on Etsy to make one as a custom order. So after all of that the necklace was finished and shipped, and I just heard back from the client today that she loves it. To quote "I am beyond infatuated with this necklace! Thanks so much for making one for me!" I am over the moon :)
